Republicans Continue Push for Accountability

The Alabama House approved important reform legislation this week sponsored by Rep. Cam Ward and supported by House Republicans and Governor Riley. The legislation would put the Department of Transportation under the control of an independent commission preventing future administrations from using the DOT to dole out favors.
Governor Riley had these comments:
The efficient way DOT operates under our administration is the exception
rather than the rule. An independent transportation commission can ensure
that governors never again use asphalt to curry political favors from
legislators. This is a reform that’s been needed for a long time and I hope
this year I will finally get the chance to sign it into law.I thank Representative Cam Ward for once again leading the fight on this
needed reform, and I thank the House members who supported it.
Riley and Ward had previously worked on this legislation during the Governor’s first term. This week, the legislation passed the House with a 89-10 vote and will now move on to be debated in the Senate.
